Psychological testing refers to a battery of tests administered to evaluate intellectual, learning, emotional and/or behavior functioning of an individual. Children and adolescents are typically referred for an assessment by their parents, pediatrician or school to evaluate learning disabilities, disruptive behavior disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit disorders, emotional disturbances and giftedness.
Assessment typically includes a structured interview with the client, completion of checklists/questionnaires, and administration of measures assessing intellectual capability, attention and memory, academic functioning, and emotional/social functioning. Testing may require more than one appointment; each testing session can range from 2 hours to 6 hours. After the assessment is complete, the psychologist will analyze results and prepare a written report to review with the client, parent, or guardian.
